I just recently really discovered Carole Lombard, I don't know what took me so long! So, several weeks ago I found myself watching Nothing Sacred from 1937. Immediately I found myself drawn to the peppy, wonderfully silly little blonde, Carole of course. She was so full of energy and so gosh darn cute! I started to watch all the movies she was in that I could. How could I have not realized she was in My Man Godfrey!? Anyway, while watching one of her many films my Mom brought to my attention that Carole was the one true love of none other than Clark Gable. I'm not going to lie, Clark Gable is one of my top five favorite men! So, the sucker that I am for love stories I looked up all I could about Carole and Clarks. Its now become one of my obsessions. Theirs has to be one of the most romantic and tragic. They had to hide their love from the movie studio for years! Then finally they were married and lived quite happily for just a few years until Carole and her Mother were killed in a plane crash in 1942. So sad! Carole has now become one of my favorite actresses of all time. If you haven't watched Carole yet, you really must! I have a feeling you'll adore her too!
Great post! I love those pictures - she was so lovely! I don't think I knew about her and Clark Gable. If you're a sucker for love stories, I highly recommend the TCM guide to Hollywood's Leading Couples - there are some great love stories in there.

ReplyDeleteshe was gorgeous! such a tragic death. I believe she was also married to none other than William Powell, "Nick Charles"! And of course, Powell was in a serious relationship with Jean Harlow (two of his loves dying before their time....even sadder). Great pics!

So gorgeous! I think my favorite of her films is "Mr and Mrs Smith." She is so hilarious and lovely the whole time. I always find comediennes to be more interesting than the dramatic types.

She is so gorgeous (and My Man Godfrey=amazing film). All my favorite film stars seemed to have lived such tragic lives; like Jean Harlow.

I had the same experience -- I remember reading about her tragic death in a plane crash while reading a Life Magazine book on the history of WWII, but I never really focused then. Less then two months ago, when I was looking for scenes of occupied Warsaw, I can across "To Be or Not to Be," and a whole world opened up. It is fascinating that both women and men adore her. Her untimely end makers her all the more a precious commodity (just check EBay for CL memorabilia); sadly, one must note that the actors who played opposite her or the photographers who so memorialized her survived her by 40-60 years.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite photo of her is one of the studio shots done New Year's Eve 1942 showing her in costume and with her hair bedecked in flowers from her last movie. It's like she was already entering the world of the sublime.
